Iranian Books on Display in India


TEHRAN (FNA)-A number of ancient Iranian books on religion, language, literature and history are currently being displayed in an exhibition in New Delhi, India.
The book exhibition in Persian, Arabic and English from Fort William College Collection which date back to 19th century, began Wednesday in New Delhi. The Exhibition, organized by National Archives of India in collaboration with Iran Culture House in New Delhi is on display at the India International Centre annex till January 19. The display, contains rare and unique works on religion, language, literature, history besides also having a collection of travelogues, books on geography and biography among a host of other subjects, was inaugurated by the Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs, Ms. Vijayalatha Reddy.
The Cultural Counselor of the Islamic Republic of Iran in New Delhi Karim Najafi and the Director of the National Archives of India Mushirul Hasan were also were present on the occasion. Fort William College was founded in 1800 in Calcutta to commemorate the British victory over Tipu Sultan at Seringapatam. Beginning as a centre for training and education for the East India Company's young civil servants, it later went on to become an important centre of Oriental Studies where both the British and the Indian scholars worked on a variety of philological researches to help modernise different Indian languages. The rich collection of the college was later distributed to different institutions, including Asiatic Society of Bengal and National Library, Kolkata. This distribution took place sometime during the first quarter of the 20th Century. The part available with the National Archives of India comprises 742 rare books and 199 manuscripts which are useful work on religion, languages, literature, history, medicine, animal husbandry, astrology, travelogues, geography, biography and some topics of general interest.
